"…wherever you are is called here," writes poet Esther Kamkar in this era of refugees and immigrations, "and you must treat it as a powerful/ stranger."

Into the Hush

By Esther Kamkar

"Always," he says, as the skies begin

to turn blue through the glass door

leading to the terrace, “my father told us

wherever you are is called here,

and you must treat it as a powerful

stranger."

I am watching

the tanned children

playing by the shore today.

Everything is anchored.

Everything is vanishing.

And tomorrow will be colder.

Esther Kamkar lives in Northern California.
