Friend, I want to share this quote with you today, because I think it captures something essential about this moment in history.

President Trump may not know a lot about the Framers—but they certainly knew a lot about him.

The Framers of our Constitution always knew a Donald Trump would come along sooner or later (though they probably expected someone a little more…charismatic, instead of a screeching narcissist in clown makeup).

As much as pundits like to wax poetic about the political “stable genius” that is Donald Trump, we both know he’s not special. He (barely) won in 2016 by fanning the same fears as countless other despots before him, and he’s been riding that wave of hate ever since.

The Framers understood that there will always be pathologically selfish people who feel entitled to absolute power. They created guardrails to stop them: Checks and balances. The Constitution. The Bill of Rights and the rule of law. A process for the peaceful transfer of power.

But the last eight years have taught us that the norms that have kept our democracy functioning for so long are just that: norms, not laws. We’ve learned the hard way that many of our institutions run on trust without accountability (lookin’ at you, SCOTUS).

We can make these long-overdue reforms, shore up our democracy, and begin the long process of healing this country—IF we turn the page on Trumpism this November.

So, I’m asking you, on behalf of Americans past, present, and future: Contribute any amount you can to help Democrats win a truly resounding victory up and down the ballot on Election Day. [[link removed]]
