Weekly Newsletter: Convention season is behind us and we’re entering the final months of a historically important campaign. It’s time for the candidates to put their cards on the table.

Hi John,

The pomp and pageantry of the party conventions are done and now the real campaign begins. What a ride it’s been! After Vice President Harris’ speech last night, we’re getting a clearer sense of her governing vision.

But let’s be honest—less than three months from Election Day, some big questions still need answers from both Vice President Harris and former President Trump.

For example:

- What’s your plan for dealing with our growing debt? Did you know we’re racking up another trillion dollars in debt every 100 days, but neither party platform lays out any concrete ideas for how we’ll get our fiscal house in order?
- What would you do if China invaded Taiwan? Or full war broke out between Israel and Iran? Or Russia escalated its war on Ukraine? These are just a few of the knotty foreign policy questions our next president will need to answer.
- If the government is as divided next year as it’s been this year, how will you forge common ground between Democrats and Republicans? Without a strategy to forge bipartisan cooperation, our next president is setting the country up for a lot of campaign promises that will never be kept.

Right now, both candidates have made plenty of promises about what they’ll give us—whether it’s tax cuts or more spending—but they haven’t given us a sense of how they’ll navigate the most difficult questions.

That’s why we’re calling for at least three debates between these two candidates before November. The first one on September 10 is a great start, but it’s just that—a start. We deserve to hear more about their plans, not just promises. In every election since 1992, at least three presidential debates have been scheduled (though one was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID). We deserve the same kind of vigorous exchange of ideas here in 2024.
