August is Black Business Month, and this is especially significant in the Fighting Fifth, a place rich in Black entrepreneurship and culture. Black-owned businesses are vital in closing the racial wealth gap, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth within our communities. These businesses not only contribute to the city's economic vitality but also empower future generations by setting a powerful example of success and resilience. However, despite their critical role, Black businesses face increasing challenges from funding to Republican attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that help level the playing field. That’s why I introduced the Minority Entrepreneurship Grant Program—to help break down the enormous barriers that Black and brown entrepreneurs face in accessing the capital needed to launch and sustain their businesses. This program will ensure that the next generation of minority business owners has a fair shot at the promise of America. As we celebrate Black Business Month, we must reaffirm our commitment to supporting and protecting these businesses, ensuring they thrive despite efforts to undermine their progress. By fighting for policies that promote equity and inclusivity, we can help sustain the growth of Black businesses and, in turn, create a more just and prosperous Atlanta.
