Last night, I proudly took the stage at the Democratic National Convention to speak about the importance of electing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, because they’ll protect our freedoms. Freedoms I put on a uniform to defend overseas, and freedoms I swore an oath of office to defend here at home.

Pundits and pollsters didn’t think I’d be up there last night.

In 2022, they said I shouldn’t talk about protecting abortion rights in my race and that even if I did, they said I’d probably lose. Two years ago today, we proved them wrong. We pulled off an improbable special election victory. And we did it because — you guessed it — we talked about freedom.

I joined the race just two weeks after the leaked SCOTUS decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization . The writing was on the wall. A radicalized SCOTUS propped up by far-right politicians was preparing to deliver the most egregious attack on American freedoms I’d seen in my lifetime: stripping women of bodily autonomy and overturning Roe v. Wade . It’s the opposite of everything I’ve spent my life fighting to defend.

I swore an oath to defend this country when I attended West Point. Later, I served two combat tours in Iraq. If Washington extremists were going to have this fight, I was getting in it too. Because I’m a patriot, and patriots fight on the side of freedom.

And the Hudson Valley proved it was on the side of freedom on August 23, 2022.

Here we are, two years later. MAGA Republicans, including my GOP opponent, have only gotten worse. They’re hell-bent on reelecting Donald Trump and passing his extreme Project 2025 agenda, which calls to criminalize and ban abortion nationwide, roll back protections for IVF, and take us away from our democratic principles — it's a blatant attack on our democracy, the very democracy I served overseas defending.

We know from experience that to protect our freedoms and win this toss-up race, we need to pull no punches. We need to be unequivocal about the stakes. And most importantly, we need to turn out every single voter.

But to do it, we need to stand up against the mountain of cash that MAGA Republicans like Elise Stefanik and Mike Johnson are spending to defeat us. This is going to be one of the closest — and most expensive — congressional races in 2024, and grassroots support is and will continue to be the X-factor that gets us across the finish line.
