John,
17-year old Gus Walz stole hearts at the DNC this week when he teared up and yelled, “That’s my dad!” during Tim Walz’s speech. It was a heartful, authentic moment that’s rare in our current political moment.
So of course Ann Coulter and the MAGA right got really weird and stirred themselves into a frenzy over it.
Sigh…
Gus Walz wasn’t afraid to show the world just how much he loves his dad. So how did Republicans react to seeing extremely wholesome love between a father and his son?
By attacking the 17-year old boy to gain clout and “likes” from their far-right social media followers:
“Blubbering bitch boy.” “Get that kid a tampon already.” “Weird.” “Gus wears eyeliner.”
The MAGA-right’s response to Gus Walz is a reminder that cruelty isn’t just part of Donald Trump’s political movement, the cruelty is the entire point of the movement.
That’s why far-right media figures so often use social media to insult and attack. It gives them political power and clout. It doesn’t matter if you’re attacking a 17 year-old boy or attacking his dad’s more than two decades of military service.
All that matters is the views, likes, and followers you gain by owning the libs, even if the lib is a teenage boy.
COURIER was founded to fight back and call these guys out. We believe the cruelty, lies, and hate being spread by the far-right damage democracy and divide our communities.
That’s why we publish factual, essential reporting on the issues that matter most to real people in the communities we serve. And we meet people where they’re most likely to encounter this cruel rhetoric – on social media news feeds and in email inboxes – and counter it at the source with real news. This is how we fight back.
