From coal to electric: Improving children’s health in Mongolia
Coal-burning stoves pollute the air inside traditional Mongolian homes, leading to respiratory diseases in young children, such as flu and pneumonia. A UNICEF-supported initiative called CHIP (short for cooking, heating and insulation product) is facilitating a clean-energy transition. Replacing coal-burning stoves with electric CHIPs regulates indoor temperatures and improves air quality, transforming family residences, schools and health clinics into safer spaces for children across Mongolia.

Providing climate-resilient water systems in Colombia
For rural communities in Colombia, mineral extraction, natural disasters and weather emergencies limit access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services. These challenges are jeopardizing children’s health and putting families’ safety at risk as they are forced to make long treks for safe water, especially young children and girls. With support from the Baxter International Foundation, UNICEF Colombia is improving access to sustainable, safe drinking water by installing solar-powered water plants that treat contaminated groundwater.

Giving children the best start in life through breastfeeding
In emergency situations, babies and young children are especially vulnerable to diseases and severe malnutrition due to a lack of access to safe drinking water, health care and food. Breastfeeding can be vital to their survival and well-being. Packed with micronutrients, breast milk strengthens a baby’s immune system and supports brain development even if a mother’s diet is unbalanced or limited. UNICEF is working to ensure that mothers get the guidance and support they need to successfully breastfeed.

Delivering critical relief against dangerous heat waves in Gaza
In addition to the traumatic impact of war, displacement and hunger, children in the Gaza Strip are experiencing waves of scorching heat that are compounding the effects of crisis. Extreme temperatures and subsequent heat stress are increasing the risk of diseases as heat waves become more intense and more frequent, putting children at greater risk. In response, UNICEF is working with partners to improve safe water access by delivering water by tanker truck and distributing water containers.
