District of Columbia - Two churches to join National Trans Visibility March. D.C.’s National City Christian Church and United Church of Christ announced that they will provide supportive religious services to participants in this year’s march as well as holding a press conference. The Trans visibility March is scheduled to take place in D.C. on Saturday, Aug. 24. Florida - State tourism website removes page for LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations. Florida’s official tourism website, VisitFlorida.com, had an “LGBTQ Travel” section as recently as April, but that page no longer exists. Moms for Liberty-backed school board candidates lose elections. Candidates aligned with Moms for Liberty, known for its efforts to ban books nationwide, lost their elections on August 20th in Indian River County, Pasco County, Pinellas County, and other locations around the state. |

| | | | Congressman Bill Pascrell dies at 87. Rep. Pascrell, a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, represented the Paterson, New Jersey area in Congress for nearly 30 years. Representatives to introduce bill addressing elder abuse against LGBTQ+ people. Reps. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and Angie Craig (MN-2) will introduce the Elder Pride Protection Act of 2024, which would establish a Justice Dept. task force to study and combat incidence of elder abuse against the LGBTQ+ community. Former Congressional staffer alleges workplace discrimination. Alex Chadwell, a former staffer for Rep. Troy Nehls (TX-22), is suing Congressman Nehls’ office, alleging he was subjected to homophobic remarks and lost responsibilities because he is gay. Former Congressman George Santos pleads guilty to wire fraud, identity theft. Santos, who is openly gay, pleaded guilty to felony wire fraud and identity theft charges. The former Congressman was expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023, one of only five members of the body to be expelled in history. |

| | | | Phil Donahue remembered for LGBTQ+ allyship. Donahue, who died on August 19th at 88, invited many people representing marginalized communities on his show, as well as addressing LGBTQ+ causes, including the AIDS crisis. Elliot Page plays trans man in new film. Page, who is a trans man himself, co-wrote and stars in Close to You, his first feature film appearance since transitioning. Famous gay penguin dies at Sydney aquarium. Sphen, a gentoo penguin, coupled with another male penguin, named Magic, with whom Sphen raised two adopted chicks. Their story became the subject of books and documentaries. After Sphen’s death, Magic began to sing, and was soon joined in song by the rest of the colony of penguins at the aquarium. |
