Protecting the Boundary Waters during the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this challenging time, the team at Save the Boundary Waters hopes you are safe and healthy. As we work to maintain our personal and community health, we are also working to maintain the health of America’s favorite Wilderness, the Boundary Waters. The federal government and Antofagasta are working overtime to get this mine approved, and we must continue our work.

Campaign staff are working remotely from their homes as we continue our scientific, legal, advocacy, outreach, and organizing work to protect the Wilderness from sulfide-ore copper mining.

Drive-in Rally Success
Last week well over 200 people joined our “Drive In Rally” - people were thrilled to celebrate the Boundary Waters on Earth Day in a safe and visible way! A line of vehicles decked out with canoes, kayaks, and signs drove from the Minnesota State Capitol past the Governor's Mansion. In the spirit of Earth Day, and to accommodate our change in plans from an in-person rally to an "in-vehicle" rally, we purchased 22,500 lbs of carbon offsets from carbonfund.org [[link removed]] . Check out this video article [[link removed]] from the Star Tribune highlighting the Drive In Rally. Thank you to all who came out - it was so fun to see you (behind your masks through your car windows!)

The Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters Goes Back to Court

While America is focused on fighting COVID-19, the Trump Administration is continuing its assault on the environment and the Boundary Waters, so Save the Boundary Waters is continuing to fight back. On April 17, we filed an appeal in our key lawsuit against the Trump administration over the reinstatement of Twin Metals' sulfide-ore mining leases.

Defending the Soul of the Boundary Waters: This Wild Land
"Without love of the land, conservation lacks meaning or purpose, for only in a deep and inherent feeling for the land can there be dedication in preserving it." - Sigurd Olson.

We were thrilled to team up with the This Wild Land [[link removed]] crew to help create this beautiful documentary about the Boundary Waters and the life and legacy of writer and conservationist Sigurd Olson.

Become a Digital Volunteer!
Digital volunteering is a great way to get involved in protecting the Boundary Waters, especially now during these more isolated (and digital) times as we all work to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that opinions are often shaped online and social media is becoming a place where movements are won, so help us protect the Boundary Waters for generations to come as a digital volunteer.
