Oldham students celebrate top GCSE results

Students across Oldham are making the best start in life after collecting a stellar set of GCSE results, with most schools reporting better results than last year.

Sam Sinfield, the son of Oldham’s Freeman of the Borough and rugby league star Kevin Sinfield OBE, was beaming after achieving grade 9 in seven subjects and a grade 8 in three

Cllr Mohon Ali, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: "We have seen some positive results in Oldham and students across our schools are celebrating. Our young people have worked tremendously hard.

"In Oldham, they are getting the best start in life and we are wishing them all the best as they take their next steps."

HAF-ing a great time at our free holiday clubs

Our free HAF summer clubs have been providing activities for all over the holidays.

At St Thomas Moorside Primary School, children have been enjoying activities including cricket, archery, arts and crafts.

They’ve also been involved in Bikeability teaching cycling skills and safety.

At Castleshaw Centre in Delph, young outdoor adventurers have been millponding, pond dipping, orienteering, ghyll scrambling canoeing, caving and baking their own bread over a campfire.

Children also enjoyed meeting the centre's own adorable pygmy goats.

Oldham’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme will be back over the Christmas break.

Upcoming M62 Closures

In September Network Rail will be closing the M62 in both directions between Junctions 19 and 20 over two weekends: from 9pm on Friday 6 to 6am on Monday 9, and from 9pm on Friday 20 to 6am on Monday 23.

These closures are needed to replace a rail bridge over the motorway.

Although the official diversion routes won’t pass through Oldham, we expect more drivers to use our roads, which could impact local traffic.

To minimise disruption, roadworks on key routes in Oldham will be paused throughout September.

TfGM will be monitoring traffic 24/7 during the closures, adjusting traffic lights to help keep things moving.

We recommend planning your journeys in advance and allowing extra time, especially during peak hours. Stick to the official diversion routes if possible and stay updated on traffic conditions through local news and the council website.

The Monthly Bee Network Member Drop-In sessions are returning next month via Teams.

These sessions offer residents the latest updates on the rollout of the Bee Network in Greater Manchester and provide an opportunity to ask questions directly to TfGM officers.

The Oldham Careers Fair is here to help you take the next steps

A range of employers and training providers will be there for you to meet at the Oldham Careers Fair.

The fair will be held from 3—6pm on Tuesday 24 September at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

There will be around 50 stall holders ranging from local employers, colleges, training providers and organisations such as the NHS, Greater Manchester Police, RAF and many more to offer information advice and guidance to support young people.
