WG Economy: The Economic Case Trump Needs To Make

WG Economy | David Winston

August 21, 2024

For today's WG Economy, we are passing along David's new Roll Call piece: The economic case Trump needs to make. The column looks at the economic arguments and supporting data on inflation, jobs, and spending.

One of the arguments was about the number of new jobs created during the Biden administration. This morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released their CES Preliminary Benchmark Analysis that "the preliminarily estimate revision indicates an adjustment to the March 2024 total employment of -818,000." Here are two quick takeaways from this development:

  1. The preliminary release indicates that the number of jobs currently created during the Biden administration would be 15 million instead of 15.8 million. That would mean that after all the jobs lost from Covid had been replaced, 5.6 million new jobs were added as opposed to 6.4 million.
  2. That would also mean Biden has averaged creating 133,000 jobs a month in contrast to Trump's pre-Covid average of 180,000.

The final benchmark revision will be issued in February 2025 as part of the January 2025 employment release.

WG Discussion Points: Is Kamala Harris

More Trusted On The Economy?

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

August 16, 2024

Kamala Harris debuted her first major economic speech this afternoon, which included proposals like a federal ban on price gouging of food. Even before any of her economic policies were unveiled, last Sunday's headline in the Financial Times declared that Kamala Harris is more trusted than Donald Trump on the US economy. According to the new August Financial Times/Michigan Ross poll, more voters trust Harris on the economy (423%) over Trump (41%). This was a change from the previous July survey showing Biden at 35% and Trump at 41%. The result for Trump was about the same as it had been in previous surveys, with Harris having some improved performance compared to Biden.

As shown in the chart, the increase in her support seemed to come from the "neither" category, having been 18% in July and down to 10% in August. This movement seems to reflect the "unfavorable to both" voters with a significant portion gravitating to Harris as the new candidate.

“My admiration for Reagan is well known, but that’s different from hero worship. This movie captures that spirit - his high moments but also his lows, and we see a man in full - the peaks and valleys. In fact, it’s the valleys that make a man more interesting. It left me in tears & gave me a new perspective on a man I thought I knew.”

- Grover Norquist, President, Americans for Tax Reform

"A must-see movie! Dennis Quaid captures the essence of Ronald Reagan, showing the grit and fortitude which inspired so many & allowed Reagan to revive America & beat communism."
