Welcome to the August issue of COPE Digest.

As we move towards the launch of our new strategy we have been looking to make COPE's position on a range of publication ethics topics more prominent for our community. We have launched a set of COPE Position s which are short summaries of our advice on a wide range of issues. Below we highlight just one of these, on self-citation, but we encourage readers to take a look, and share them with colleagues who may be interested.

Plagiarism in 2024: discussion topic

Join us for the COPE Forum where participants discuss publication ethics issues submitted by members.

The Forum begins with a topic discussion on plagiarism in 2024. Plagiarism in scholarship is under renewed scrutiny due to changing research practices and the rise of AI. Debates include whether different parts of scholarly works should have varying originality standards, how authorship is defined in large collaborations, and the role of AI in levelling the playing field for authors whose first language is not the one they are publishing in. These changes necessitate reevaluating established concepts of plagiarism, including detection methods, institutional responses, and educational approaches, especially for idea plagiarism versus verbatim copying.

Whether or not you can attend the Forum we welcome comments which add to the discussion on the COPE website.

COPE recommends that journals should develop policies and standards on self-citation thresholds (which may vary by article type and field of research), provide educational resources to support best practice, and establish procedures to respond to potential misconduct.
