I never imagined I would say this, but I just got off the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago! I spoke in front of the country as a teacher and survivor of the Sandy Hook shooting, and I want to take a minute to reflect.
John, December 14th, 2012 is a day I will never forget. The terror, crying, and running. And the twenty innocent, beautiful first grade children and six of my colleagues who should still be here.
But being able to share my story and bring our movement to the national stage is so impactful in our fight to end gun violence in our schools and communities.
We started Teachers Unify because educators have been on the frontlines of this crisis, but were missing a seat at the table in gun violence prevention and policy making.
Now, we’re empowering thousands of educators to be advocates against gun violence. And thanks to 14,000+ supporters fueling our organizing and advocacy work, we’re bringing educators’ voices to the forefront.
Being on the stage tonight was a massive step forward for our movement. But the gun lobby is insanely powerful, and has unlimited sums to block our movement’s success. It’s going to take all of us coming together to fight back and win.
