John,
One of the most important days on the calendar is little more than a week away.
Next Tuesday, the 20th, is The Trust for Public Land’s Giving Day — a day we set aside each year to ask nature lovers all across the country to
do just a little bit more to help support America’s public lands.
You may already be familiar with the different categories into which our work falls.
- We protect land for people.
- We build close-to-home parks where they’re needed most.
- We help cities protect themselves against the effects of climate change.
What you may not know is how much time and effort we put into each of these areas, and the number of different projects each one contains.
- From the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in the Pacific Northwest to Atlanta’s Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area … from Rolston Rest in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest to the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail in Hawai’i … we try to be there, wherever public lands are threatened, whenever the opportunity arises to protect land from reckless development.
- Our goal is to see to it that every single American has a quality park or open space within a 10-minute walk of home. The mayors of 276 different American cities have signed on to our 10-Minute Walk program, pledging to bring their cities up to this standard.
- Cities as disparate as Los Angeles and New Orleans, as New York City and Sandusky, Ohio, are already dealing with the effects of climate change — flooding, wildfires, superstorms and tornadoes, it’s all happening now. That’s why we’re helping them build green infrastructure to connect trails and transit lines, lower temperatures, absorb rainwater, and act as a buffer against rising seas.
We are grateful that our members make it possible for us to do so much good work in so many different places. But every now and then, we need just a little more help. So I hope you’ll agree to do two things right now:
1. Pledge to join The Trust for Public Land by making a special donation on Giving Day.
2. After you do, you’ll have the opportunity to share our message with your social network.
Our nation’s public lands are facing so many threats right now … 6,000 acres of open space are disappearing every single day … 100 million Americans don’t have a nearby place in which to experience nature … rising sea levels and extreme weather events are threatening so many of the places where we live — please do your part by pledging to give and by urging everyone you know to do the same.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Kim Elliot
