With the election season well underway, here’s a quick update from the field as our team works on multiple fronts to support voters and election officials this fall:
🗳️ Election audits: Audits are routine checks on election results that help confirm election outcomes. We’re providing real-time support to election officials across the country, especially in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Rhode island. We also continue to advocate for sound audit policy, like a bill in Arizona that passed earlier this year strengthening their audit law (read our blog here). We’re also staffing up—former election administrator Jessica King joined our team as Senior Policy Associate to help advance our audit work.
📣 Informing the public: Accurate information about how elections work is crucial for the health of our democracy, especially after Election Day when votes are being counted, reported, and checked. We’re prepping explainers, hosting briefings, fact checking disinformation, and supporting the election workers who deliver for our democracy. The team shared findings from messaging research on post-election audits completed earlier this year (watch our webinar here and check out the slides here) with advocates, researchers, and election officials, with more briefings and materials planned for early fall. We also continue to be a trustworthy, nonpartisan source of information about election security issues (listen to a recent interview with Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs C.Jay Coles here about the dangers of internet voting).
🤝 Election Protection: As one of six organizations leading the nonpartisan Election Protection coalition, we are providing assistance to voters (learn more at https://866ourvote.org/) and ramping up our eGeeks program to support the voting period. We co hosted a virtual convening for partners this summer, which included election scenario planning, trainings, information sharing, and more. We’re ready to go!
📋 Enhancing our data and tools: We’re expanding, refining, and improving our data tools to better serve our democracy. In addition to maintaining our popular Verifier tool and Voting Equipment Database, we added Research and Outreach Associate Lamontae Shively (who also hails from an elections office) to our team this summer to increase our capacity.
✅ With election season upon us and anticipated close contests in swing states, the public needs to know how election officials show that the winner won and the loser lost. We’re excited to announce that we’re launching a Recount Law Database soon, inherited from our wonderful partners at Citizens for Election Integrity Minnesota. Paired with our Audit Law Database, having information on audits and recounts in one place will help give the public a complete picture of these crucial post-election processes (click here to read how they work together).
As we celebrate Verified Voting’s 20th anniversary, we recognize the ongoing work to secure our elections. We can’t do our work without supporters like you and hope you’ll consider a gift to help support our work.
