Dear, Friend,
We have some very important news to share with you about the
Citizens Not Politicians Constitutional Amendment (now Issue 1) to end
gerrymandered legislative districts in Ohio.
Last week,
Secretary of State Frank LaRose and members of the Ohio ballot board
met to vote on the language that will appear on your ballot in the
November 2024 election.
The ballot language adopted by the Board violates Ohio law and the
state constitution, which require ballot language to be accurate,
impartial, and not prejudicial.
The language approved by the
ballot board is not a fair and accurate representation of what Issue 1
will do.
Watch this short video to
understand the misleading ballot language.
Issue 1 will ban
gerrymandering, making it impossible for extreme politicians to
manipulate voting districts to protect their interests and guarantee
their re-election. But the ballot language approved last week
uses loaded and purposefully misleading language to try and confuse
voters.
For that reason, the Citizens Not Politicians campaign filed a lawsuit on Monday afternoon in the
Ohio Supreme Court against this dishonest and illegal
language.
Regardless of what happens in
court, it is critical to remember that changes to the language that
appears on the ballot in November DOES NOT change the language of the actual constitutional
amendment.
Issue 1 would still remove politicians from the process of drawing
legislative districts. It would still put a 15-member citizen
redistricting commission in charge of developing fair, representative
maps. It would still ensure that Ohioans will finally elect their
lawmakers rather than allowing lawmakers to pick and choose their
voters.
This is
just another example of why we need to get politicians out of
redistricting
Republicans, Democrats, and Independents from all 88 counties
signed a petition to put this issue on the ballot because they know it
is time for a change.
The awful ballot board language and attempt by LaRose to mislead
voters has backfired. It has energized supporters and increased
volunteers.
We will keep you posted on the status
of the lawsuit, but in the meantime please help us spread the
word:
Vote Yes on Issue 1 in November!
