President's Message

It's important to recognize that school nurses are more at risk for legal action than ever before, especially with the recent changes in state laws affecting the delivery of school nursing services.

Do school nurses need malpractice insurance separate from their school-provided policy? All nurses should have their own policies in which they are the named insured. (Legal Issues 101: Malpractice and Licensure Discipline. NASN School Nurse.)

Nurses Service Organization (NSO) is a leading provider of insurance solutions for nursing professionals and an endorsed provider of NASN. Like NASN, NSO is committed to serving the needs of nursing professionals everywhere. NSO empowers nursing professionals by offering malpractice insurance to bring NASN members peace of mind and enhance their risk management education.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Type 1 Diabetes at School, Empowering Students and Families

Children with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) spend 6-10 hours a day in school and require multifaceted school nursing care and resources. NASN's School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes provides evidence-based practice recommendations and resources for school nurses; contributes to improving and implementing diabetes-related school policies; and ensures that children with T1D have the same opportunities for academic success and full participation in school activities as their peers without T1D and this toolkit will help school nurses implement those recommendations.

Related Resources: Breakthrough T1D is your go-to organization for getting resources and organizing social events for T1D students. The organization's School Guide—Breakthrough T1D and No Limits Speaker Series—Breakthrough T1D are great ways to hear about the latest care for your students with T1D students. They also have local chapters nationwide that offer social events that you could share with your students and their families.
