Updates from the DNC Convention

ADL is at the DNC convention, as we were at the RNC previously. In Chicago, we have been meeting with elected officials and community leaders to make sure that our priorities are heard; ADL’s Midwest regional office and the ADL Center on Extremism are monitoring protests and raising concerns where needed and we are here to support the families of hostages as they speak out for their loved ones still being cruelly held by Hamas. Here are just a few of the things we've seen and heard...

- As part of our efforts to strengthen our coalition to fight antisemitism and hate across the political spectrum and throughout society, ADL has met with governors, attorneys general, state and national legislators, Jewish organizations and other groups that support our mission, state DNC delegations and even an NBA coach (Steve Kerr).
- This week,

ADL commended the DNC for its platform’s inclusion of ADL recommendations to combat rising antisemitism, support Israel, oppose BDS, fight campus antisemitism, protect houses of worship, improve hate crime reporting and counter online hate.
- We were deeply moved by the warm reception including “bring them home” chants for the parents of hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin as they took the DNC stage (just as Omer Neutra’s parents had experienced at the RNC a few weeks ago). We thanked Hersh’s family for their impactful efforts at the DNC, greeted the families of other victims of Hamas’ cruelty and went to the powerful

We reported on anti-Israel protesters who converged outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago. ADL Midwest raised concerns about this weeks ago. Read more about what the experts at the ADL Center on Extremism are tracking — physically confronting police, burning American and Israeli flags and explicitly promoting Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Other protesters held a banner promoting the antisemitic Great Replacement theory and a white supremacist network.

- And at an event hosted by Agudath Israel, antisemitic protesters in the convention center tried to push their way in to disrupt the meeting. At the event, ADL staff stepped up to support Agudath and,

as ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt noted, these protesters just confirmed that anti-Jewish hate in America is a growing problem, which was exactly the point of the meeting.

What’s in Manifesto of Extremist, Antisemitic Turkish Assailant: An 18-year-old suspect who livestreamed himself stabbing multiple people near a mosque in Turkey was fueled by the extremist belief in accelerationism and motivated by past mass killers including white supremacists, an analysis by the ADL Center on Extremism has shown. Our investigation found that on the day of the stabbings, the assailant shared his “manifesto” — which was rife with antisemitism — and other extremist publications. He referenced Jews more than any other group, encouraging others to attack synagogues, sharing antisemitic tropes about Jewish power and promoting the false claim that
Jews finance degeneracy.

Michigan Universities Work to Address Antisemitism After ADL Report Card: Since the release of ADL’s Campus Antisemitism Report Card, our Michigan regional office has had ongoing discussions with both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. After ADL’s latest review of incidents, evaluating the way schools handled the incidents and publicly disclosed administrative actions and policies, MSU’s grade climbed and we have meetings scheduled with their senior leaders about how they can further improve their grade by taking action in support of Jewish students.

Sifting Decades of ADL’s Work Against Antisemitism: We are excited about this good news... Archivists have started going through millions of files to preserve and digitize decades of ADL archives, which will then be available to researchers and the public. The files come from our regional offices across the country and cover research, community involvement, undercover operations and monitoring of events. The goal is to shed light on the history of hate groups and help combat antisemitism and other discrimination in America today.

79 years after the end of WWII, a German court upheld the 2022 conviction of a former Stutthof Nazi concentration camp secretary for her complicity in the murder of over 10,000 people during the Holocaust. Justice delayed is better than no justice at all.

A @nytimes reporter intentionally leaking PII acquired through her reporting led to widespread doxing attacks against hundreds of Australian Jews. This is appalling & has dangerous consequences. The NYT investigating itself is no solution; an independent 3rd party must investigate, assess the damage and recommend appropriate disciplinary action against the journalist.

The crass and base hostility shown towards Israeli audience members, along with the hate towards Jews displayed by the comedian, was truly ugly and should be addressed by the Fringe Festival.
