Dear John,
I’ve been in or around politics for 40 years, and I don’t remember feeling as elated about a presidential nominee as I do now — and seeing all those beautiful smiling faces packed into the United Center in Chicago, I know I’m not alone.
However, I must assure you: We’re still the underdog in this race. Kamala Harris may have pulled ahead by a point or two in the national polls, but that’s not enough. Because if she wins by only one point in the national popular vote, she will very likely lose the Electoral College.
That’s why I’m so excited about the latest videos we just tested. The results are incredible!
The public opinion experts we work with tell us that if we can increase support for our side by even 2 to 3 points, that’s a win. But our latest videos have been moving the numbers by 12 to 15 points on the make-or-break issue of immigration.
Your donations make all of our work possible, and with your help we can go even bigger. Will you donate $5 a month to help educate the public and stop Donald Trump?
Yes, Robert! I'll start a monthly donation.
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in monthly.
Let’s back up and explain how we work at Inequality Media Civic Action.
Every day, our team is dreaming up new ideas, writing posts and scripts, and shooting videos that we can push out on social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. We’ve built an audience of nearly 9 million followers across these platforms, so anything we push out reaches a ton of people — including Republicans and undecided voters.
But first we want to make sure that the videos we’re creating are actually effective at educating and changing people’s minds. So before we push a video out far and wide, we show it to a random sample of our target audience to see if it moves the needle at all on understanding complex issues.
Our latest videos focus on immigration, which we know is a key issue in this election and traditionally an area where Republicans “do better” than Democrats.
That’s where our latest test results really stand out. We asked voters whether the overall impact of immigration on the economy was positive or negative, and after watching our videos, support across all audiences moved in the positive direction by over 14 points, even among people who voted for Donald Trump in 2020. Undecided voters moved our way by 15.6 points!
The video moved Trump voters 9 points away from supporting “a national law enforcement effort to deport undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.” Voters who supported Trump in 2020 moved 13.5 points away from the idea that immigrants are taking American jobs, and 11 points on the claim that immigration increases crime.
And here’s a stat that really blew us away: People who watched our videos moved 9.2 points in the direction of wanting to see immigration increase. The public opinion experts we work with say they’ve simply never seen anything like it.
Across virtually every demographic, we saw similar results. College-educated voters. Non-college voters. Even Fox News watchers.
With your help, we can keep reaching the voters we need to help Kamala get over the top, but we cannot take one vote or one day for granted.
That’s why I’m asking you: Will you donate $5 a month to help educate the public and stop Donald Trump?
Yes, Robert! I'll start a monthly donation.
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in monthly.
Thank you for joining with us,
Robert Reich
