Dear Friend,

The new school year is here and Oumar (7) says he is full of excitement about “meeting new teachers and making new friends.”

Oumar’s family, including his older brother Mohamed (9), fled war in Liberia, and with the help of so many, USCRI has welcomed them to the United States and provided them with a chance to rebuild and heal from the ordeals they escaped from.

But refugee families arrive in America with very little. USCRI strives to help them integrate into their new communities. Yet arriving in a new country and culture can be overwhelming. Together, we can help make things easier for kids like Oumar and Mohamed.

Young refugee and unaccompanied children, many who face discrimination and language barriers, enter school in America without even the basics of their peers—a computer, internet access, and school supplies like backpacks, pencils and notebooks. A generous, one-time gift ([link removed]) could mean such a difference for a young, aspiring refugee child beginning his first school year in a new community.

Oumar (7) and his brother, Mohamed (9), share the backpacks they received from last year’s Back-to-School campaign in Erie, PA

Would you consider a back-to-school gift for a refugee child today? ([link removed])

With an urgent one-time gift today, innocent children and youth—who have recently fled war in Democratic Republic of the Congo or Afghanistan or drug violence in Guatemala—can have a laptop, a backpack or other basics like pencils, scissors, and crayons. ([link removed])

The right to education is fundamental to our values as a nation, and so is welcoming refugees and immigrants. Together, we can help so many other children and youth, like Oumar and Mohamed, to receive the education they so much deserve.

Thank you for your compassion.

Sincerely,

Eskinder Negash

President and CEO
