Hi John,
Kamala Harris. Donald Trump. These are the names dominating headlines today, and it’s likely all you’re going to hear about until November…and probably beyond.
But, this election, we’re voting on a lot more than who the president will be. And, while we keep hearing that "democracy is on the ballot" this year, in some places, democracy is quite literally on the ballot. In many states, voters will have the opportunity to change laws themselves via ballot initiatives. This means we can pass laws that help fix our broken system and put power back in the hands of the people.
Here's how it works: Big policy shifts usually start at the state level before they become national — just look at women's suffrage, marriage equality, and even marijuana legalization. If you want to see crucial reforms in your state tomorrow, and systemic change across the country, it starts with supporting efforts in these states today.
Best of all? You don't have to wait until November 5 to make a difference, and you don't have to live in one of the states with a ballot initiative to help out.
Here are three things you can do today to help fix our broken political system:
- Learn about these game-changing ballot initiatives. Key legislation is on the ballot to pass Ranked Choice Voting, stop gerrymandering, and protect existing pro-democracy laws.
- Find a volunteer event. We have lots of options for volunteering coming up, many of which can be done right from your own home. Join us! 🙋
- Support our work. Your dollars go directly to work in the states that need it most to make an immediate impact. 💸
