Dear friend,
Ensuring quality public safety is vital to our community. With the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Creighton University in the heart of our district, I have worked to secure funding for two pedestrian walkway projects.
UNMC is building a pedestrian walkway over Saddle Creek Road to ensure the safety of walkers and cyclists who travel in the area. Recently, I helped secure $2 million from the federal Department of Transportation to fund this construction, in addition to $10 million of city funding and $600,000 from UNMC.
My collaboration with Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert has not only supported the pedestrian walkway over Saddle Creek Road and an additional walkway over Leavenworth Street but also paved the way for ongoing projects that promise to bring a significant economic boost to the city of Omaha, instilling a sense of optimism and hope in our community.
I secured $7 million in federal funds for the Omaha Urban Core Burt Street plan. This money will be used for pedestrian pathways and bicycle routes surrounding Creighton University's Omaha campus. This new pedestrian pathway will be located on Burt Street between 20th and 24th Street, continuing from 24th Street to 27th Plaza on Creighton University's Omaha Campus. Additionally, this funding will improve stormwater management, utility relocation, parking relocation, and 2.5 acres of green space.
This project will provide a safer alternative for students and community members who travel on Burt Street and safer travel for students who live in the university dorms backing up to Burt Street. Furthermore, the pedestrian pathways and bicycle routes will allow for greater access to North Omaha and other surrounding areas of the city.
I am proud to have secured funding for the new pedestrian paths at UNMC and Creighton University. These projects will help to revitalize the urban center for cyclists and pedestrians.
