Yesterday I was at an airshow with over 30,000 people, in blazing sun and heat, for over six hours. The Navy???s Blue Angels were the headliner, and something struck me as they were introduced. The announcer said that most military pilots are inspired to enter that career during a single moment in time — usually a childhood visit to an airshow where they got to witness the spectacular maneuvers of fighter jets and other aircraft.
I know this is true because yesterday was no exception. Kids stood in the crowd with their model F/A-18 Super Hornets thrust high in the air (cost at the airshow = astronomical, but clearly no one cared). They lined up to meet the Blue Angels pilots near their planes after the show. For six hours they spurned smartphones, gaming devices and streaming services to gaze in real time at aeronautical excellence. And to be amazed. And inspired.
What inspires you? What causes you to take action? What moves the needle in your life? Dreaming, achieving, and making a difference isn???t just for kids. Maybe we should stop living vicariously through others (TV and social media) and instead do one thing that is the result of saying, ???Wow.??? I???m too old and my eyesight too poor to be a fighter pilot, but I???m going to think of one way this week to admire excellence — and maybe go after it myself.
