Sometimes called 'howdy birds' by cowboys because of how they seemed to nod in greeting from the entrances to their burrows, the Western Burrowing Owl sadly lost one-third of their population from 1956 and 2016. But we are not without hope. Our research powers our best path forward to help more birds survive at this critical time.
