Dear Friend,
We love it when people walk into the Adoption Center and leave with a new best friend. But guess what—not all of our pets are at the Adoption Center.
Thousands of adoptable pets stay in foster homes each year, such as Garbanzo—a dog who flourished in our foster care program. Not only do these pets get a break from the stresses of shelter life, but the program also frees up more space at the adoption center for homeless pets in need.
“On day four, he pulled his bed out of his crate and brought it over next to my desk so he could hang out with me while I was working. It was the most endearing thing I’d ever seen a dog do," reported foster parent Brad Suskind.
Garbanzo stayed in a few foster homes before adopter Josh Rousseu finally spotted him on our website.
“My fiancé and I noticed his very long snout and his little body and thought he was the cutest. We then met via zoom with his foster moms who were so kind and informative and made us fall in love,” says Josh.
The next step was setting up an appointment to meet in person.
“Garbanzo was very nervous, but we knew he was perfect and would grow to be an amazing addition to our family. By the end of the meeting, he was giving us kisses and lying on our laps,” says Josh.
It was a perfect match.
“He’s our little bean. Garbanzo loves wrestling with dad and playing catch. He also loves jazz. He has his own spot on the couch, a play area with his toys, and a yard he can go into anytime,” says Josh.
While it takes a couple extra steps to meet and adopt a pet staying in foster care, pets like Garbanzo show us exactly why it’s worth it. It also ensures we know how a pet behaves in a home environment, giving us even more information to share with a potential adopter.
