In honor of our Whale-Watcher members of our monthly membership program, ASAN’s been taking a dip into the digital ocean this August, as our resource pages and advocacy posts have become a feeding ground for advocacy-hungry digital whales. 

But our digital friends are not the only whales coming our way this month. Our team reached out to the brilliant and dedicated marine science community to see if we could find any whale experts who would share their time and knowledge with us–and Julianne Wilder, a whale acoustics expert, got back to us with a resounding yes! 

Julianne earned her BS in Zoology from Oregon State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from the University of Puget Sound.  After teaching high school Science through the pandemic, she rejoined the Passive Acoustics Branch at NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center, specializing in analyzing acoustic data collected in real-time on ocean gliders and buoys that are used to let boaters know when whales are in the area. She also runs the training program for new acoustic analysts, teaching them how to identify baleen whale calls to track their movements along the U.S. East Coast.

Today, Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 6:00 PM ET, Julianne Wilder will join ASAN for a free online presentation and Q&A session. This event is free and open to anyone who registers.

We have a form here if you have any whale acoustics (the sounds whales make and how they talk to each other) questions you would like to send before the event! The ASAN team will do our best to make sure as many submitted questions are answered as possible, but we cannot promise that we will have time for Julianne to answer all of them!
