Rep Angie Craig faces MN-CD2 GOP candidate Joe Teirab, and his anti-abortion views run deep |
U.S. Rep Angie Craig’s opponent, the Republican U.S. House candidate Joe Teirab’s anti-abortion views run so deep that he attributes his very existence to anti-abortion advocates.
Teirab’s mother almost got an abortion when she found out she was pregnant with him. She went to New Life Family Services — a Minnesota crisis pregnancy center — and “by the grace of God” they “encouraged her to have me,” Teirab said during a GOP candidate debate in January.
Teirab, a son of a Sudanese immigrant, is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was both a county and federal prosecutor before running for Congress. Teirab won Tuesday’s Republican primary, and he now faces U.S. Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota’s most competitive district. In May, the Cook Political Report moved the 2nd District from “likely Democrat” to merely leaning that way — indicating the race will likely be close again. |

Access to abortion has become one of the largest and thorniest election-year divisions, with Vice President Kamala Harris’ entrance into the presidential race ensuring an even more prominent role for an issue that was already a cornerstone of Democrats’ campaign strategy. Harris and former President Donald Trump have taken drastically different approaches to the subject over the years.
Trump famously declared in 1999 before his political career that he was “very pro-choice,” adding, “I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it. I hate everything it stands for.” Republicans have long since given him a pass for those remarks. He has since described himself as the “most pro-life president” in U.S. history.
Harris, on the other hand, has been unwavering. As a senator and presidential candidate in 2019, she put forward an extensive plan to protect abortion access modeled after the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in which states would be required to get preclearance from the Justice Department before changing abortion laws. The ambitious proposal, which would have required the approval of both chambers of Congress, did not succeed. But it does offer insight into the high priority that protecting reproductive freedoms would be in a Harris administration. She is also believed to be the first sitting U.S. vice president to ever visit an abortion clinic.
