Dear John,

On 19th Aug, World Humanitarian Day, I met Opira Bosco Okot, a 29-year-old environmental humanitarian activist who has recently completed an 8-month internship at UNHCR in Geneva.

Born in South Sudan, Opira fled his home at the age of 22 and now lives in Uganda. Reflecting on his journey, he told me, "I identify as a refugee who has become a climate activist. Growing up, I saw how climate change threatened not just the environment, but our education, safety, and security." His experiences in the settlement, where climate change led to food shortages and increased poverty, fueled his determination to act.

"One day, I simply began by giving out tree saplings and educating people about the importance of reforestation," he explained. Over time, these small actions grew into a larger organization, and the tangible benefits to his community made his work all the more fulfilling.

When asked about the impact of climate change on humanitarian work, Opira's response was poignant: "Absolutely! Climate events severely impact humanitarians' access to those in need, making our work tougher. We're dealing with limited resources while facing the desperation caused by climate change." The emotional toll on humanitarian workers is real, and Opira emphasized the importance of building climate knowledge and expertise to address these challenges.

Opira urged everyone to take action, no matter how small. "Our voice, our actions have power – let's use it for our climate’s good."

Inspired by Opira’s story? Have a question or want to send him a word of encouragement?
