It's vital to recognize the unique challenges that LGBTQ+ students often face. Our August research brief shows that nearly a third of LGBTQ+ students attend schools with at least one anti-LGBTQ+ policy. These policies, which often include restricted discussions on LGBTQ+ topics and opt-out provisions for parents, can significantly affect the mental health and well-being of these students.
LGBTQ+ young people attending schools with multiple anti-LGBTQ+ policies are especially at risk, with 55% reporting that they seriously considered suicide in the past year. This rate is notably higher than their peers at schools with fewer (43%) or no such policies (35%). These environments contribute to elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and past-year suicide attempts among LGBTQ+ students. School should be a safe place to learn and grow, yet for many, these policies create an atmosphere of fear and exclusion.
I invite you to explore these insights and consider how we can work together to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all students.
