THE SCOREBOARD

A victory for voters in Illinois

  • In a win for voters, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a Republican lawsuit to invalidate Illinois mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day but received by officials for up to two weeks  after. This is the fourth loss for the GOP in challenges to ballot receipt deadlines.

  • The Republican National Committee challenged ballot receipt deadlines in Mississippi and Nevada and appealed both cases to federal circuit courts. The right-wing Public Interest Legal Foundation challenged North Dakota’s mail-in ballot receipt deadline, but their case was dismissed in February.

  • In a new YouTube video, Marc and Democracy Docket’s Paige Moskowitz break down the Illinois ruling and why the GOP is filing the same failing lawsuit in multiple states.

Wisconsin court ruling will make voting harder for voters with disabilities

  • The Wisconsin Court of Appeals granted GOP lawmakers' request to pause a ruling that would have allowed voters with print disabilities to request and receive accessible absentee ballots via email during the 2024 elections.

  • The court stated that changing policies too close to the election could cause confusion for the Wisconsin Elections Commission, local clerks and voters.

DOJ defends the Voting Rights Act from GOP attacks

  • In a case challenging Louisiana's legislative districts, the U.S. Department of Justice urged the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reject state Republicans' argument that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — a crucial provision — is unconstitutional and cannot be enforced by voters.
