We’re facing an appalling reality, and Mother Jones put it perfectly:

“As the Voting Rights Act Nears 60, Conservative Judges Are Gutting It From Every Angle”

Here’s just a few things that got us to this point:

• FIRST: Over a decade ago, the Supreme Court’s Shelby County ruling Team effectively gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act and made it easier for states to make voting harder — particularly for people of color.


• THEN: States across the country with histories of racial discrimination were free to jam through harsh voter suppression laws, including strict voter ID requirements, cuts to early voting days, and the removal of ballot drop boxes.


• NOW: A recent ruling from the 5th Circuit threatens to further unravel the Voting Rights Act by making it harder to challenge discriminatory maps in court.

Opponents of voting rights aren’t letting up, so we can’t either. Rush a donation to help protect the right to vote, safeguard our democracy, and ensure free and fair elections.

For as long as the Voting Rights Act has been on the books, it’s been under attack.

Anti-democratic forces have been trying to gain illegitimate, unearned power at the expense of communities of color, especially in the South.

But we’re pushing back. And we have grounds for hope. Last summer, the fair maps movement won big at the Supreme Court in Allen v. Milligan. The ruling protected Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and led to new maps across the region. Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia all have new maps that feature additional districts where Black voters can elect candidates of their choice.

But you can guarantee that more attacks on voting rights and fair representation are in the works at this very moment. And democracy is on the ballot in elections across the country this November.
