Dear John,
As a long-time political analyst and so-called “Map Guru,” I’m typically the guy people seek out when they need answers. I’ve always enjoyed diving into data to uncover insightful trends, whether it’s for the presidential election or the Kentucky Derby.
But when my mom was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) in 2021, I was left with more questions than answers.
ILD is an umbrella term for a group of rare conditions that cause chronic inflammation of the lungs, which could lead to serious lung damage and — in the most extreme cases — eventually require a lung transplant. Despite the severity of ILD, there was shockingly little available research on its prevalence, causes, treatments or cures.
For the first time in my life, I couldn’t turn to data to find answers. That was scary. That’s why I became an ambassador for the American Lung Association.
