My mom is my 'why'.

Dear John,

As a long-time political analyst and so-called “Map Guru,” I’m typically the guy people seek out when they need answers. I’ve always enjoyed diving into data to uncover insightful trends, whether it’s for the presidential election or the Kentucky Derby.

But when my mom was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) in 2021, I was left with more questions than answers.

ILD is an umbrella term for a group of rare conditions that cause chronic inflammation of the lungs, which could lead to serious lung damage and — in the most extreme cases — eventually require a lung transplant. Despite the severity of ILD, there was shockingly little available research on its prevalence, causes, treatments or cures.

For the first time in my life, I couldn’t turn to data to find answers. That was scary. That’s why I became an ambassador for the American Lung Association.

If my mom’s story sounds familiar to you, it’s no coincidence. Many people have a powerful story to tell about the impact lung disease has had on their lives. I want to read yours. Please take a moment to share how you or someone you love has been affected by lung disease.
Share your story
Sincerely,
Steve Kornacki
Ambassador, American Lung Association

Annual Day of Tribute:
August 21
Tomorrow is the Lung Association’s annual Day of Tribute, a time to honor the people who bravely endure the effects of lung diseases like ILD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and lung cancer.

But acknowledging their bravery isn’t enough. We must work to build a future without lung disease — for the people we love, and countless future generations.

This Day of Tribute, let's honor those suffering from lung disease who are still seeking answers. Who do you honor? Tell us your story.
