See you at the Fair
The Great Minnesota Get-Together is almost here and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) will be there.
Our state is home to more than 285,000 Veterans and thousands more family members. The Minnesota State Fair provides an opportunity to connect with many of you.
Through your military service, Minnesota Veterans have earned many federal and state benefits. Sometimes, the only benefit used by a Veteran is their right to be interred at a Veterans Cemetery. MDVA strives to inform and educate all Minnesota Veterans and their families about the many programs and services at their disposal.

LSS CORE provides support for Veterans, Active Military Members and Their Families
Military service can have a long-range impact on service members and their families. From managing financial concerns to maintaining healthy relationships or caring for loved ones with a disability — active service, deployment and returning to civilian life each have their own challenges. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has a long-standing partnership with Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) to provide supportive services to Veterans and their families through the CORE program.
LSS CORE (casework, outreach, referral and education) has successfully served thousands of Veterans to help improve quality of life. CORE services include casework, caregiver support and respite, financial counseling, housing assistance, access to nutritious meals and mental health counseling. Casework includes assessment of individual needs and personalized support. Individualized plans are created through a strengths-based lens.

Ending Veteran Homelessness - Efforts Making an Impact
Since the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) and its partners began concerted efforts to end Veteran homelessness in 2015, the number of Minnesota Veterans experiencing homelessness on any one day has decreased from more than 600 to around 200. While the goal remains to achieve “functional zero” across the state, progress over the last nine years demonstrates that it is possible, with more than 3,300 success stories to date.
A collaboration of public, state and nonprofit partners has already effectively ended Veteran homelessness in eight of 10 Continuums of Care (CoC) in Minnesota. These areas include the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, West Central, Suburban Metro Area (SMAC), Central and St. Louis Continuums of Care (CoC) regions in Minnesota. Targeted work is underway in the remaining two CoCs: Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

Remembering our Residents: Hastings DOMS hosts Memorial Program
Earlier this year, Minnesota Veterans Homes - Hastings Domiciliary (DOMS) hosted a heartfelt memorial service honoring the unique life journeys of Residents who had passed away. Residents, caregivers and other team members of this tightknit community gathered in the chapel, not only to mourn those losses, but to celebrate the lives of their comrades.
The service began with a moment of silence; a single candle was lit in front of a framed portrait of each of the eight Veterans who died during the past year. Caregivers then shared their own stories and experiences with each Resident. Many Veterans also recalled interactions they had with their “Dom-mates.” Service anthems for all of the United States military branches were played. The ceremony concluded with a prayer, cementing the peace and reflection felt by all.

‘Cooties’ support new TVs at Fergus Falls Veterans Home
Cooties Donation
Veteran Residents and Veteran spouses of the Minnesota Veterans Homes - Fergus Falls were recently presented with a donation of more than $10,000 in support of a project to replace current televisions with 42-inch flat screens in all Resident rooms.
“We have been thinking about this replacement process for years,” says Stacy Honer, Building and Facilities Maintenance Foreman for the Veterans Home. “Over the years, all sizes of TVs have come with Residents entering their new home, from very small black and white TVs to very large older modular floor flat screens. We have seen them all.”
