John,
Today we come together to recognize Workers Memorial Day. This is a day set aside to remember workers killed or injured on the job and to renew the fight for strong safety and health protections. This year, we have a special duty to remember the brave AFGE members who have lost their lives on the frontlines of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Over 100,000 AFGE members face the daily threat of being exposed to the novel coronavirus as you continue to serve the American people. In service to their country, dozens of federal employees have died because of complications related to the virus. Today, we honor their memory.
On this Workers Memorial Day, help us show AFGE’s support for members who have passed away by signing our online condolence card.
AFGE is also committed to doing all we can to help the families of our members who have succumbed to this terrible disease.
We have established the AFGE COVID-19 Family Relief Fund for surviving family members of AFGE members that have tragically died due to COVID-19. The fund will provide $1,000 grants with $500 from AFGE and $500 from the Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA) to surviving families (subject to the availability of funds).
You can help us support these families by clicking here and donating to the fund.
If you would like to submit a
member of your local or council for consideration for the $1,000 grant from the
AFGE COVID-19 Family Relief Fund, please complete every section of our online
form, including obtaining a signed release from an authorized family member. You can access the form by clicking here.
On this Workers Memorial Day, we remember the words of Mother Jones. We will mourn for the dead, but AFGE will keep fighting for the health and safety protections our members so desperately need. I'm honored to be with you in that fight.
In Solidarity,
Dr. Everett Kelley
AFGE National President
