CHICAGO – Things are heating up in Chicago, where last night the states confirmed their nominating votes for Harris to the tune of their own music (from John Denver to Chappell Roan), Doug Emhoff cemented his role as the party’s goofy dad and husband, and the Obamas gave two rousing speeches to cap off the night. Here at the Prospect, our ragtag team got busy covering and opining on the convention. David Dayen explored the legislative priorities question, Harold Meyerson caught up with the UAW’s Shawn Fain, and Luke Goldstein swung by a swing-state breakfast. Meanwhile, I’m cooking up some thoughts on the meaning of motherhood that was hinted at throughout last night’s program, specifically in Michelle Obama’s speech. It’s my first time covering (or attending) a convention, and I’m blown away by the energy and celebration of it all. It makes sense that major party players want to throw major parties, but I’m still walking around in awe. After the night’s speeches end, party royalty run around town to content creator raves, union soirees, and glitzy concerts. But outside of Chicago’s party halls, pro-Palestine and anti-war protesters are active. Yesterday, the Chicago Police Department arrested over 70 protesters outside
of the Israeli consulate, the National Lawyers Guild Chicago said. Another major “March on the DNC” protest is planned for Thursday.
TODAY’S AGENDA
The key speech tonight is Tim Walz’s acceptance speech, but we’ll also hear from former President Clinton, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. I’m excited to hear what Pete has to say.
