John, are you tired of presidential candidates only focusing on a few battleground states – and effectively ignoring the rest of the country?
That’s the broken Electoral College in action. Presidential hopefuls know that they only need to campaign in just a handful of competitive states – so they mostly leave the rest of us out and rarely even bother trying to win our votes.
And worse, two of the past six elections have gone to the popular vote loser – meaning two of our most recent presidents failed to get more votes from the American people than their opponent.
That doesn’t sound like a fair democracy by the people to me. Our democracy shouldn’t give some Americans’ voices more weight than others.
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV) would ensure that all of our votes count equally when picking our next president – and that the candidate who gets the most votes always wins the presidency. Add your name to tell states to sign on >>
It’s a commonsense solution: with NPV, the candidate who wins the most votes nationwide would become the next president. National Popular Vote would finally give voters in ALL 50 states plus DC a real voice in presidential elections.
Best of all, it wouldn’t take an act of Congress or a constitutional amendment to get it done. By signing onto the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, states can pledge to award their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner – simple as that.
And we’re closer to putting this in place than you might think – 17 states and the District of Columbia have already signed on, giving us 209 electors of the 270 electoral votes we need to implement NPV.
That’s why Common Cause has prioritized advancing the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in as many states as possible this year – and we’ve recently helped bring Minnesota and Maine on board. With your action today, we can create the fair, representative democracy we deserve.
John, we’ve seen how the broken Electoral College distorts our democracy. Join us today in calling for a better solution – and ask every state to sign onto the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
It’s time to STOP the Electoral College from silencing the majority of us and ensure that every voter has a meaningful voice in presidential elections, no matter where they live.
Thanks for all you do,
Jay Young, Senior Director of Voting & Democracy
