Where to Hike, Bike & Relax in Fall Color
Are you looking forward to being outdoors in a cool breeze? Aren't we all! Fall is a popular time for visiting parks not only for the weather, but to see the beautiful foliage and the many birds migrating south. So plan your camping and day trips early.
Mother Nature isn't always predictable, but fall typically colors the trees around mid-October, and it's the perfect time to go hiking at your parks. Try a hike at one of these parks that typically get flashy in fall:
Lake Bob Sandlin – E of DFW
Huntsville – W of Houston
Guadalupe River – Hill Country
Cleburne – SW of DFW
Find a list of Texas trees with fall foliage, and the parks where you can find them, in the Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine story It's Fall, Y'all. Plan your biking, hiking or walk with downloadable and interactive park trail maps. Some of your parks also have accessible trails.
Most overnight camping or lodging can be reserved up to 5 months in advance, or reserve your day passes up to 30 days in advance. We'll see you out there!
You can continue to purchase an all-access, annual Texas State Parks Pass for $70 after Sept. 1. There will be no price increase in 2024 as was previously announced.
With the 1-year parks pass you receive:
- Unlimited free entry to state parks for you and a carload of your guests.
- Discounts on camping in state parks.
- Discounts on items in park stores and more.
Your pass currently gives you entry to 88 parks, and more Texas state parks are being created right now thanks to the Centennial Fund. Buy your pass online, at any state park, or order by calling (512) 389-8900.
