Join USCRI on #GivingTuesdayNow next week
Giving Tuesday Now ([link removed]) , a global day of unity and giving, is one week from today.
With your gift to USCRI, you can be a hero for a family in need, just like someone did for the Rami family. Read their story and learn how you can help:
The Rami* family from Iraq—mother, father, and four adult children—arrived in Michigan in January after five years in a refugee camp. USCRI staff immediately began helping the family through the transition and teaching them about life in the U.S.
Two of the sons, Adil and Adam, were eager to begin working as quickly as possible. With USCRI’s help, they interviewed with a motor vehicle parts factory and received job offers. “The entire family was overjoyed when Adil and Adam were hired,” says Khalid Abbo, USCRI Detroit’s employment coordinator. “These young men were so happy to have found work within only two months of their arrival. The family could finally see a stable future ahead of them.”
Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 crisis, both men were laid off from their new jobs less than two weeks after they started. Their short period of employment meant they were not eligible for unemployment benefits—a situation that many newly-arrived refugees are now finding themselves in. Suddenly, the Rami family could not pay their rent and were afraid they would be evicted.
However, because of a generous supporter, USCRI was able to give the family a check for $1,500 to cover their rent and utilities during this temporary crisis. “You could hear the relief in their voices when we told the Rami family that we could provide them with emergency funding,” says Tawfik Alazem, director of USCRI’s Detroit office. “This family has endured so much already. They want to work and to build a successful life here in the United States, and eventually they will be able to. But right now, they need a helping hand to make it through this crisis.”
You can be the helping hand that keeps a family housed, fed, and safe during this difficult time. Your gift will make a tremendous difference in someone’s life.
