Get the facts on mpox aka monkeypox

Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week...
1. Covid-19 vaccines don’t cause mpox (#body1)
2. AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine does not contain mpox (#body2)
3. Vaccines are not ‘poison’ (#body3)
4. Politics Live blog (#liveblog)
5. Also this week (#morefacts)

But first...

A significant increase in the number of cases of mpox (the disease caused by the monkeypox virus) in several African countries was recently declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This has been followed by a number of posts on social media containing unsubstantiated claims about the disease. During the previous outbreak of mpox in 2022 we wrote several articles ([link removed]) about the disease.

Bad information can spread quickly on social media and may be harmful if people use it to make decisions about their health.

To spot bad and misleading mpox information, ask yourself these three simple questions:

Where’s it from?
What is missing?
How do you feel?

** Covid-19 vaccines don’t cause mpox ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
Several posts on Facebook claim that mpox is actually a side effect of the Covid-19 vaccines.

False. Mpox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. According to the NHS, mpox causes blisters which are sometimes confused with chickenpox, but it can only be caused by a monkeypox infection and has nothing to do with Covid vaccines.

** AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine does not contain mpox ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

[link removed]

There is no link between mpox cases and a component of the AstraZeneca vaccine, despite claims made in a number of viral social media posts.

The vaccine contains a modified virus that usually infects chimpanzees but this can’t lead to humans developing mpox or any other disease.

** Vaccines are not ‘poison’ ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]

A post on Facebook has claimed that “vaccines are all poison”. That’s not the case.

Vaccines are rigorously tested for safety before being licensed and are held to a higher standard of monitoring than many other medicines.
