TAKE ACTION [[link removed]]
Dear John,"Business leaders blast City Council worker-protection package as 'pandemic politics.'" That’s the title of the Crain's New York story on our Essential Workers Bill of Rights legislation.

Well, if living wages, paid sick leave, workplace protections, and dignity for our essential workers are your kind of "pandemic politics," then SIGN ON to support the Essential Workers Bill of Rights → [[link removed]]

SIGN ON [[link removed]]Ignoring the voices of nurses, drivers, grocers, and other frontline workers, the business lobby has trained their fire on our Essential Workers Bill of Rights:

• The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce called our legislation "unbelievable" and shared op-eds from the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal opposing us.

• The real estate lobby group REBNY said "the council has neglected to show a full understanding of the legal, fiscal and operational issues at play.”

• A lobby group for companies like Uber and Postmates said, "it’s alarming that the City Council is threatening to interfere with industries that provide New Yorkers with flexible work..."

The people of New York City know better. There’s nothing "flexible" about having zero paid sick days. It’s "unbelievable" to oppose fair pay for those putting their health and safety on the line. What’s "alarming" is that doctors and nurses are being fired for speaking out about health and safety conditions. And we fully "understand" that essential workers deserve not only cheers but ALSO basic workplace and whistleblower protections.

Giving essential workers the pay, dignity, and support that they deserve is not only reasonable, but frankly, the least we can do for the people who are keeping our city running right now. Corporations and their lobbyists need to know that we won’t let them get away with politics as usual.

More than 800 New Yorkers have signed on to support our Essential Workers Bill of Rights -- can we make it 1,500 by the end of the day? [[link removed]]

We’re hoping to have a hearing on this legislation next week, so stay tuned for more ways to show your support for essential workers.

Thank you so much -- stay safe and support each other,

Team Lander

PREVIOUS EMAIL FROM BRAD:

Dear John,

At 7pm tonight, as we have almost every night, Meg, Rosa, and I will be out on our stoop banging pots and pans alongside our neighbors to thank the New Yorkers who show up every day during this crisis to stock grocery shelves, deliver food and supplies, and care for patients in our hospitals and nursing homes.

As a Council member, I’ve spoken to many frontline workers over these last few weeks. They are thankful for the cheers -- but they also need paid sick days, living wages, protection for retaliation, and more.

That’s why my colleagues and I are introducing the NYC Essential Workers Bill of Rights. Check out what’s in this package, then sign on as a citizen co-sponsor -- because we need to do more than just cheer for our essential workers → [[link removed]]

SIGN ON [[link removed]]The NYC Essential Workers Bill of Rights includes:

• Extending NYC’s paid sick leave to cover gig workers like Instacart shoppers, Uber and Lyft drivers, and Amazon Flex warehouse employees. (Intro. 1926)

• Protection against being fired without a good reason, including whistleblower protections for health care workers sounding the alarm about health and safety conditions at their facilities. (Intro. 1923)

• Pay premiums for hourly workers at large companies, so employees putting their health and safety at risk are fairly compensated. (Intro. 1918)

• Calling on state leaders to fix rampant misclassification, so that bad actor companies can’t label their employees “independent contractors” to get out of providing basic benefits. (Res. 1285)

I’m proud to sponsor this package of bills along with Speaker Corey Johnson, Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, and Councilmember Ben Kallos.

City Council has started meeting virtually, and we are hoping to fast-track having virtual hearings on these bills very soon. But that doesn’t mean they will be easy to pass. We fully expect to face industry and lobbyist pressure to weaken or remove parts of these bills -- in fact, it’s already started! Can you sign on and support these badly-needed protections and relief for our frontline workers?

ADD YOUR NAME, John: Sign on to support the NYC Essential Workers Bill of Rights -- and share a message about why you support this effort → [[link removed]]

ADD YOUR NAME [[link removed]]As we cheer tonight for our nurses, drivers, grocers, and other essential workers, let’s recommit to ensuring they can take care of themselves while they keep our city running.

Thank you so much -- stay safe and support each other,

-- Brad
