LEGISLATIVE LANDING: RECAPPING IMPORTANT INITIATIVES FROM THE 118th CONGRESS

Last week, we covered H.R. 1, a critical bill to rebuild our energy independence and reduce costs for American families. This week, continue reading to learn more about steps I've taken to help specialty crop growers access crop insurance to cover losses caused by cold exposure and freezes.

EXPANDING AFFORDABLE CROP INSURANCE OPTIONS

Hardworking agricultural producers in Florida's Heartland grow over 200 specialty crops, like citrus, fruits and vegetables, that can be impacted by cold exposure. It's often challenging to cover damage caused by freezing temperatures for specialty crops.

To help growers recover from crop losses, I introduced H.R. 6186, the Temperature Endorsement for Multi-Peril Policies (TEMP) Act to create an affordable temperature-based insurance policy. The TEMP Act directs the Risk Management Agency to research and develop a temperature-based index policy that uses National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.

HONORING OUR FALLEN IN AFGHANISTAN

Image

Last week on August 15th marked the third anniversary of the fall of Kabul due to President Biden’s catastrophic withdrawal. On August 26th, 2021, 13 brave servicemembers were brutally killed in the Abbey Gate suicide bombing. It was the deadliest attack on our troops in Afghanistan since 2011. May we always remember their sacrifice. I continue to urge the House to conduct necessary oversight, ensuring those responsible are held accountable.

Our stellar intern, Sonya-Nicole Weidner, worked alongside staff this summer in our Washington, D.C. office to better understand the legislative process. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Political Science and is an aspiring J.D. candidate. Before joining our team this summer, she previously interned for Florida State Senator Jay Collins. We’re grateful for her hard work and service to FL-18.
