Actions for the week of August 19, 2024
Happy Tuesday, Activists!
Summer is sadly coming to a close, but climate action is for all seasons. We hope that your summer has been full of friends, family, fun, and quality time outdoors. While you make the most of the remaining long days and fair weather, here are a few climate actions you can take to help protect the planet and keep the good vibes strong.
Action 1
🌴🤲🗽 Tell Governor Hochul: Prevent Deforestation and Help NY Businesses Thrive Sustainably
The Tropical Rainforest Economic & Environmental Sustainability (TREES) Act (A.9711/S.8898) will prevent NY State agencies from purchasing goods linked to tropical deforestation. It protects biodiversity and enshrines respect for the rights of Indigenous and local communities while positioning New York as a leader in the crucial fight against global deforestation. The TREES Act also has the potential to foster long-term economic benefits by encouraging the use of innovative, sustainable materials that reduce future maintenance costs and promote local industry.
The bill has passed by a majority in the NY State Assembly and Senate, but the governor has so far refused to sign it. Send an email urging Governor Hochul to sign the TREES Act into law, a move that will help protect our planet and provide New York businesses with the tools they need to thrive in a competitive, ethical, and environmentally conscious market.
Action 2
🪧⚖️📣 Help Protect Greenpeace
Greenpeace is being sued by Big Oil. Energy Transfer, the Big Oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, claims that Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International organized the 2016-2017 Standing Rock resistance. This is a false and racist attempt to erase Indigenous leadership from a consequential, historic protest.
If Energy Transfer wins the case, Greenpeace USA could face financial ruin, ending over 50 years of environmental activism, and threatening our fundamental rights to organize and protest. A win for them sets a dangerous precedent — allowing more attacks on unions, activists, and journalists — and silencing our speech through intimidation.
Take action by signing the letter urging Energy Transfer to drop the lawsuit!
Action 3
💳🤑🙅♂️ Escalate pressure on Citibank
Citibank is the worst funder of fossil fuel expansion since the Paris Agreement went into effect in 2016 and the second worst funder of dirty energy projects in the world from 2016 to 2023, spending a total of $396.3 billion on coal, oil, and gas.
We need your help to build our pressure on Citi: by targeting one of Citi’s most important profit centers — their large credit card partnerships with Costco, Macy’s, LL Bean, Best Buy, AT&T, Sears, and Home Depot. Our goal is that the executives of Citi’s credit card clients are getting flooded with emails asking these companies to drop dirty Citi as a credit card partner due to Citi’s fossil fuel financing.
Here is Summer of Heat’s Digital Action Toolkit all ready to go with an email template, digital action template, and the email addresses for the executives of Citi’s credit card clients. It should take less than five minutes. Let Citibank know they can no longer endanger us all!
