You might already be familiar with our efforts to pass National Popular Vote – but if you’re not, it’s an agreement between states to award their electoral votes to the candidate that wins the most votes in a presidential election.
It might sound fantastical... but what if I told you that 17 states, representing 209 electoral votes, had already signed on – and we only needed a handful more to reach the 270 threshold needed for victory?
Implementing NPV would mean that no one could become president without the majority of Americans’ support – like George W. Bush did in 2000 and Donald Trump did in 2016.
I can’t emphasize enough how important NPV is to achieving a truly representative democracy. As it stands now, presidential candidates only want to campaign in a handful of swing states – ignoring two thirds of the country and discouraging voters from showing up at all in those states.
And I don’t need to tell you how much difference just one presidential term can make: Supreme Court Justices, executive orders, and even declaring war! The stakes are simply too high to allow an individual that didn’t win the majority vote into office.
It’s no secret we’re working in a broken system. But the solution is within reach. Already this year, members like you got NPV to the Governor’s desk in Maine, after getting NPV passed in Minnesota just last year – proving that your action makes a difference.
Sixty-five percent of Americans support this reform – which means it’s only a matter of time until we pass it, provided we maintain our current level of work. But as we head into a historic presidential election – and whatever comes after – there’s no guarantee we’ll have the resources to do so.
