A Win: Plastic Surgeons’ Group Rejects Gender Surgeries for Children

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently declined to endorse gender-transition care for minors, providing a major win for the Help Not Harm movement.

The Family Policy Alliance has for years maintained that transitioning children is fraught with permanent life-changing consequences. This position by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons validates those concerns and hopefully represents the first of many similar decisions from other national medical groups.

Leor Sapir, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, addressed the significance of this decision in a series of social media posts recently.

“The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, an organization representing 92% of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the U.S., becomes the first major medical association to break from the consensus over ‘gender-affirming care’ for minors,” he wrote.

“In the U.S., the use of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries to help kids who feel distressed about their developing bodies has depended on a perceived consensus of medical groups,” Sapir said.

“Critics argue that the consensus is manufactured and enforced through suppression of alternative viewpoints and of evidence reviews,” he added. “The [American Academy of Pediatrics], for instance, has suppressed member initiatives to get the group to conduct a systematic review of the evidence.”

Because of your support, one of the leading medical groups in the nation has essentially sided with Family Policy Alliance and our work to protect the health and well-being of children over radical gender ideology. As of today, lawmakers in 23 states have banned some or all gender procedures for minors by enacting laws based on Family Policy Alliance’s Help Not Harm legislation.
