John,
As hundreds of millions of Americans work from home during this crisis, internet access has become even more crucial. For those living in rural areas, a lack of reliable access to the internet exacerbates the economic challenges Americans face today.
While businesses have temporarily shut their doors to help slow the spread of coronavirus, more are moving their business online looking for opportunities to connect with customers in a new way. But for those without high-speed internet, closing their physical location may mean their income is lost for good.
Moreover, with schools closed, students are being asked to submit their assignments and take classes over the internet as well. For those in rural areas without consistent access, this can mean the difference between keeping up with their homework or falling behind. These students shouldn’t be at a disadvantage because of their zip code.
In late February, I was proud to announce that Central Virginia will see millions of dollars of new investments in broadband internet infrastructure. This investment, through the USDA’s ReConnect program, will help close the digital gap in many of our district’s counties. But John, we can’t give up. Expanding broadband internet access will remain a top priority for me, so that no matter where someone lives, the economic and educational opportunities of our global, interconnected world will always be available to our communities.
Thank you for your support,
Abigail
