A Win for Property Owners

What to Know: A Canton, Michigan man—represented by TPPF attorneys—has won his battle in federal court against township officials who tried to fine him for clearing his own land to prevent flooding.

The TPPF Take: The case is a win for property rights and the U.S. Constitution.

“Canton tried to force Frank Powelson to pay over $40,000 for removing his own trees from his own property even though it admits that the removal didn’t harm anyone,” says TPPF’s Chance Weldon. “The court rightly recognized that sort of abusive behavior by government ‘goes too far’ and violates the Constitution.”

Successful Reentry

What to Know: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the early release of thousands of prison inmates—many without the kind of support that will ensure their re-entry into society is successful.

The TPPF Take: We can take steps to ensure successful reentry, as TPPF’s John Koufos testified recently before a presidential commission.

“Securing steady employment is vital to re-establishing a stable life post-incarceration,” says Koufos. “Living-wage jobs allow reentrants access to a sense of purpose and community, to pay off outstanding child support payments, court fines and fees, and victim restitution, and contribute to the economy as taxpayers and consumers.”

Long-Distance Health Care

What to Know: The coronavirus has shown the usefulness of telemedicine.

The TPPF Take: Expanding telemedicine is part of TPPF’s Health Recovery agenda for the U.S.

“Telemedicine offers a convenient and safe alternative to traveling long distances to see a doctor,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Texas should permanently eliminate regulations waived during the coronavirus outbreak that increased telemedicine access and lower costs.”
