Get ready for hunting season by completing a safety course!
Summer may be in full swing, but it's going by fast. Now is a great time to start thinking about getting ready for hunting season! If you haven't held already held a hunting license, you'll need to complete a hunter safety course first. (License-specific requirements and exceptions apply.)
Maine offers safety courses online and in-person, and we have many courses coming up. Choose your path and get ready for a safe and ethical hunting season. We hope to see you at a course soon!
**Lost your hunter safety card or certificate? Call 207-287-5220 for a replacement card or to find your hunter safety certification number (applies to hunter, archery hunter, and trapping).
Continue your path to hunting with Firearms Hunter Safety. There are many in-person courses coming up, and there is also an option to take a portion or the entire course online. Choose what fits with your schedule and location. Maine?s hunter education courses will prepare you for a safe and enjoyable season as a new hunter and include firearms safety, hunting scenarios, map and compass, wilderness survival, and more.
The archery hunter safety course now includes crossbow as well as bow and arrow modules. You need an adult archery hunting license to hunt with a bow and arrow or crossbow unless you can show proof of having previously held an adult license to hunt with bow and arrow in any year after 1979, successful completion of an archery education course, or evidence of previously holding a crossbow permit in Maine prior to 2024. Archery hunter safety is also offered in-person or online.
Looking to hunt with a firearm or archery equipment? Achieve two goals with one class with this three day in-person session. This is broken down into two 3-hour sessions of classroom instruction and homework assignment on the first & second day (one for firearms and one for archery) and a final session that is a skills and exam day. Once you attend all three days and pass the final exams, you will receive your firearms and archery hunter safety cards needed to purchase your hunting licenses.
Dates: August 19, 6:30pm-9pm; August 20, 6:30pm-9pm, and August 25, 8am-4pm

A bear trapping permit and trapping license or a big game hunting license are required to set a trap for a bear during the bear trapping season. The Black Bear Trapping Education course must be completed to purchase a bear trapping permit, though exceptions apply and can be found in the trapping law summary.
Bear trapping season starts September 1, 2024 and goes until October 31, 2024, so there is plenty of time to complete the course and purchase your bear trapping permit. Register today to continue your path to wildlife conservation with bear trapping.
If you have already competed a firearms or archery hunter safety course, there are still ways for you to prepare for the fall hunting seasons. Sight in your rifle at the Summerhaven Range or attend a Next Step Workshop to gain experience and confidence in the field.
The 2024-2025 Hunting Lawbook is now available. Plan your next hunting trip with updated season dates and bag limits, legal hunting hours, and new laws (including the new archery laws found on page 16). Being a responsible user of the Maine outdoors means staying informed of, and complying with, the current laws and rules.?
