Testimony from the survivors
CND had the privilege of hosting two Hibakusha, survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, when they visited London with the Peace Boat in June.
Toshiko Tanaka was only six years old when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. She described bright whiteness as the bomb hit and suddenly she found her face and neck burned; she still bears the scars today. In the days that followed the attack, she fell ill from radiation poisoning and remembers the smell of burnt bodies, which still haunts her today.
Ogawa Tadayoshi was just a baby when the bomb hit Nagasaki. Although his family were not hurt directly by the bomb, he spoke of the deadly surface radiation that poisoned them in the days following the bomb and the long-term dangers of radiation, like cancer, sickness and birth deformities.
The testimonies from the Hibakusha are crucial for the work of CND; they motivate our fight for a world without nuclear weapons. I hope you feel the same and that you would like to honour the survivors by supporting our campaign.
