John,
I’m grateful that the work of The Trust for Public Land to create new places for everyone to get outside has not slowed down due to the current situation. We’ve protected 12 new places in just the last six weeks — including creating a new state park with our partners in Colorado. This is because of the commitment from our members and public land advocates like you.
Let me share with you a project that we completed just two weeks ago in central Vermont. Working with the Stowe Land Trust, the Vermont Department of Forests, and other partners we permanently protected the Hunger Mountain Headwaters — 1,877 acres of land that was at risk of being sold and developed. The land will now be part of C.C. Putnam State Forest — securing critical wildlife habitat, protecting the Winooski River Watershed, and ensuring access to popular hiking destinations.
This expansion of protection of the Worcester Range — one of the only undeveloped mountain ranges in the area without a ski area or bisecting roads — will safeguard that sense of wildness and exceptional outdoor experiences just minutes away from the capital, and the recreational hubs of Waterbury and Stowe.
I’m especially pleased that this project was completed during this time of uncertainty, when access to trails and vast public lands will be an essential part of our mental and emotional health, as well as our recovery, allowing us to reconnect to nature and our communities.
The Trust for Public Land is committed to protecting 1 million acres of land over the next five years, everything from forests to prairie land to seashores and riverfronts, but we are dependent on our members and supporters for that to happen. I hope you’ll take advantage of #GivingTuesdayNow and make a tax-deductible contribution of $35 or whatever you can afford to our work protecting land and building parks for people.
And remember, as soon as you make your donation, it will be matched two for one, which means it will be able to do three times as much to support all our vital work.
The Trust for Public land is a non-profit organization. Even in the best of times, the resources we need in order to operate — as well as our very survival — are completely dependent on the generosity of people like you. We’ve achieved great progress with your help thus far. Please make your #GivingTuesdayNow gift — which will be tripled — to sustain our vital work through any challenges ahead.
Thank you for being a changemaker for public lands and your support of The Trust for Public Land.
Sincerely,
Kim Elliot
