ICE’s Faulty Detention Data Undercounts the Number of People in Its Custody [[link removed]]
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) appears to be severely undercounting the number of people it has in immigration detention. A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO)—a congressional oversight agency—published last week found that ICE’s data contained glaring mistakes, leading to a significant undercount of people in immigration detention. The GAO’s report also found inconsistencies between different ICE field offices regarding data collection practices, including recording of data from individuals identified as “vulnerable” populations.

Since their unforgettable debut at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games, the Refugee Olympic team, which represents millions of refugees and forcibly displaced people worldwide, keeps making history. This summer at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the team won its first-ever medal. Cindy Ngamba, a Cameroonian refugee who now lives in the UK, won the Olympic Bronze medal in the women’s middleweight boxing category. She is one of 37 athletes who competed on the international stage under the flag of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Refugee team.
FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

This recently updated fact sheet from the American Immigration Council discusses the costs of border security, interior enforcement, and funding for the U.S. immigration enforcement system at large.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Our politicians like to say the United States is a nation of laws. But to restore order and reduce illegality, we must create a functional and more generous system of legal immigration. It is critical if we truly want to create a system that reflects our collective values: fair, fast and just.”
